Emperor’s Hymn

The Emperor's Hymn, "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser," is one of Joseph Haydn's most famous melodies and one of the most enduring patriotic themes in European music. Composed in 1797 in honor of Emperor Francis II of Austria, the hymn was intended as an Austrian counterpart to Britain's God Save the King. Haydn later incorporated the melody as the theme of the second movement of his String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76 No. 3, from which the quartet earned the nickname "Emperor."

The melody is distinguished by its noble simplicity, balanced phrasing, and dignified character, embodying the ideals of loyalty, serenity, and national pride. In the quartet, Haydn presents the hymn followed by a series of masterfully crafted variations, demonstrating how expressive richness can arise from the simplest musical ideas. The tune later became widely known as the melody of "Deutschlandlied," Germany's national anthem, ensuring its lasting place in both musical and cultural history.
