The Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 69 No. 1, popularly known as the "Farewell Waltz" (Valse de l'Adieu), is one of Chopin's most beloved piano miniatures. The nickname stems from the widely repeated story that Chopin wrote the piece as a musical farewell to his fiancée, Maria Wodzińska, although this association remains part of the work's romantic tradition rather than a documented title chosen by the composer. Like many of Chopin's famous nicknames, "Farewell Waltz" was attached after his death.

Despite its graceful dance rhythm, the waltz is imbued with nostalgia and quiet melancholy. Its elegant principal theme unfolds with lyrical simplicity, while contrasting episodes introduce moments of longing and gentle emotional tension before returning to the opening melody. Composed in 1835 but published only after Chopin's death, the work belongs to a group of posthumous waltzes that have become staples of the piano repertoire. Combining expressive warmth with refined pianistic writing, it remains a favorite among students, concert pianists, and audiences alike.
